Age Isn’t Nothing But a Number

How old do you feel? Often, we let our age determine what we can and cannot do or shall I say, will not do. When you age, your body tends to weaken. It doesn’t work as well as it did when you were younger. Still, do you believe you can do anything as long as you put mind over matter?

Sometimes my muscles are very stiff and when they get that way I don’t feel like doing anything. But, after hearing about Mrs. Tao, I think I’m just going to do as singer Taylor Swift says, “Shake It Off” and keep moving.

Tao Porchon-Lynch is ninety-eight years old and still moving around like the energizer bunny. She holds the Guinness Book of world record as the oldest yoga instructor and still participates in ball room dancing. At ninety-eight, Tao is just as glamorous as she can be. Mrs. Tao has had a very exciting and rewarding life. She marched with Gandhi, helped rescue Jews from a Nazi camp in France and had a lavish career in modeling. This amazing woman says she awakes every morning saying, “today is going to be the best of her life”. If you ask me, her positive attitude is a determining factor of what has kept her living to be the age she is.

Another thing Mrs. Tao swears by is, she doesn’t drink water, instead she prefers wine. This is a woman after my own heart.

I believe the more exciting things you do to keep yourself going throughout your life will keep you going when you get older.  Activities are a key to staying young at heart. Many, who age, often sit around doing nothing. That’s not good, because if you don’t use your body and mind, you’ll forget how to use them. I was told a long time ago that an idle mind is the devil’s playground. Just because you get old, doesn’t mean you should just lie down and die. It’s a blessing to age.

Exercising is a great way to be active. I remember surfing the channels one morning only to come across this very vibrant older lady on the public access doing chair exercises. She caught my attention because I’m in a scooter and some of the exercises she was doing, I could actually do too. Now, a few days a week, I tune in to see what different routines she is doing so I can mimic them. Just because I’m sitting, doesn’t mean I’m not trying to work on getting a beach body!

Remember, age isn’t anything but a number. Stay young at heart and keep involved in activities to stimulate your mind. Hopefully, we all will be blessed to live a long healthy life and be just as active as Mrs. Tao.
