Compliments Build Confidence
Have you ever been pleasantly surprised by receiving a sincere compliment? A simple phrase like, “Great job!” or “Looking good!” can really make your day. Because let’s be honest - “Life be lifing’!” as they say. In other words, navigating the day-to-day is not always easy. It throws plenty of curveballs. Hearing a compliment now and then can sometimes mean the difference between a terrible day and a bearable one. Sometimes, offering a compliment to someone else can have a similar effect.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot because National Compliment Day is January 24th. Imagine what it would look like if no one ever gave out compliments. I think we would agree it would make for a disappointing world. You could be doing your very best, knowing you’re killing it, but if no one ever acknowledges your hard work, you’re going to feel bad. Everyone needs affirmation in the form of a compliment.
Growing up with a disability was difficult for me. Learning how to do daily tasks like feeding myself, dressing myself, and speaking to be understood was especially challenging. One thing that kept me going was compliments. For every achievement accomplished, encouragement was given. No matter who offered the kind words: my mom, siblings, or a therapist, they all made me feel good and gave me the motivation to carry on.
As I got older, I started to get better at complimenting myself, too. There’s nothing wrong with giving yourself an “attagirl/attaboy”. It’s important to learn how to celebrate yourself when others don’t recognize your efforts. Doing so helps you build confidence as you move forward.
One funny thing I’ve noticed about compliments is that some people downplay them. Especially women. According to Beyonce, women “run the world”! And if it comes from Queen Bey, then it must be true, right? She’s a bad chick and worthy of all the compliments in my book! So, women should let their light shine and receive those compliments joyfully, because they deserve them.
My challenge to you this week is to compliment someone on something - no matter how big or small. I’ll start! All you readers in blog nation are awesome and I appreciate your support. Please pass on a compliment and make the world a better place.
