Good Examples That Last a Lifetime
Throughout my lifetime, many good examples were set for me that will probably stick in my mind forever. Everyone can benefit from the wisdom of mentors and other positive role models. It’s especially important for young people who may live with adults who aren’t engaged or may not lead them in a loving way. Here are just a few lessons that left an impression on me:
If you’re on time, you’re late.
A peer once said this to me. Time is precious and waits for no one. If someone has made room in their schedule for you (whether for personal or professional reasons), the least you can do is be on time. It demonstrates that you value the moments they are sacrificing to be present with you. Lately, I’ve tried to attend events a little early. My punctual friends have really helped me be more accountable in this way.
Make eye contact.
When speaking to someone, it’s important to know you’re engaged. There’s a saying, “the eyes are the windows to the soul”. If this is true, I need to look straight into them when addressing who I’m talking to. I also like it when this act is returned.
Carry yourself with grace and dignity.
“Ladylike” might be an old term to younger generations, but my mom reminded me of this phrase often. She added that it’s hard for people to disrespect a young lady who holds herself in high regard. According to mom, being ladylike did not mean being snobbish nor weak. To her, it meant insisting on respect. Mom was very ladylike. Her examples of this character have not only been engraved in my mind, but on those of her granddaughters and great-granddaughters as well.
Work for what you want.
There’s nothing better than receiving something that you worked hard to obtain. Occasionally, you may receive something you haven’t worked for. Some call that luck, but I call it a blessing. You can best believe that if you want something in this life, you’re going to have to work for it. In my opinion, it makes the reward much sweeter.
