Independence Day 2.0 - Harold's Story

Independence Day 2.0

As a black woman with a disability, knowing I have the independence to make my own decisions means everything to me. Independence is the one thing people with disabilities must fight for most because society can underestimate our abilities. It’s a tough battle, but one that is necessary for individuals to achieve the life they want for themselves.

Having the drive to maintain your independence is one element of success. Another is finding an ally to help you achieve your goals. This is exactly what happened to Harold Burgher when he connected with the Goodwill Easterseals Miami Valley (GESMV) Vision Services Program.

Harold loves horror movies and professional wrestling and was a very independent person until getting poked in eye during a wrestling match. As a result of his injury, he lost some of his vision, experienced depression, a drop in confidence and the ability to do some tasks on his own. Trying to settle into his new “normal”, Harold was uncertain about his future until he was introduced to the Vision Services Program.

Thanks to the support of the vision team and their program, Harold is now happily employed at a local movie theater and is thriving with the help of some very cool assistive technology. See Harold’s story unfold by watching his Success Story video here!

Like Harold, I have also benefited from the programs and services of GESMV over the years. Thanks to this organization, Harold and I have been empowered to maintain our independence! As we are preparing to celebrate Independence Day, I would like to invite anyone on their journey to achieve independence to reach out to GESMV for assistance.
