Meet Jacqueline

After the loss of her husband, Jacqueline, known as Jackee to friends, found herself navigating long, quiet days. Grief weighed heavily, and life felt smaller than it had ever been. Hoping to rediscover connection and purpose, she walked through the doors of the Goodwill Easterseals Miami Valley West Campus in Trotwood, Ohio.

What she discovered went far beyond activities; it was a community. The Young at Heart program welcomed her with open arms. Laughter returned during bingo games, friendships bloomed over shared meals, and joy found its way back into her life through art and outings. Her spirit, once dimmed by loss, began to shine again.

“I just fell in love with it. It was just something that opened up my heart to be there and to be around other people my age,” said Jackee.

Jackee quickly became more than a participant. Volunteering with Young at Heart, she found fulfillment in giving back and spending time with new friends. Her warmth and sense of humor naturally lifted those around her.

“She wants to care, naturally and she wants to love, and she does it from the bottom of her heart,” said LaVar Glover, Director of West Campus Operations.

Once someone who came seeking community, Jackee now helps others find theirs. The same halls she once entered quietly, she now walks with purpose, joy, and confidence.

Jackee didn’t just rebuild her life - she became a reason others feel at home.

“Goodwill is there to help the community to make it strong. It’s there for young and old. It’s more than people realize. It really touches my heart to be part of helping people within the community,” says Jackee.
