Meet Joseph

Joseph grew up in Dayton with a supportive family, but his life shifted during his teenage years when experimenting with substances became harder
to control. One constant remained: his passion
for cooking. He trained in culinary arts, worked in restaurants across the country, and helped open high-volume kitchens, but ongoing struggles and a felony record made employment difficult.
Everything changed when Joseph was connected to Miami Valley Works, a service of Goodwill Easterseals Miami Valley. What began as a mandatory referral became a turning point. “Honestly, it was one of the best things that ever happened to me,” Joseph says. Through personalized, judgment-free coaching, he received support with applications, interviews, and rebuilding confidence. With their help, he secured a position at a major hotel, where he worked for more than six years.

When that role eventually stopped offering growth, Joseph once again turned to Miami Valley Works. The team helped him navigate his next transition, leading to a chef position at a smaller restaurant where his creativity could truly shine. Today, Joseph designs menus, develops daily specials, and has rediscovered the joy that first drew him to cooking.

Beyond career success, stable employment has transformed Joseph’s life. He now supports his family, including his young son, and feels hopeful about the future.

For Joseph, Miami Valley Works wasn’t just about finding a job; it was about finding lasting support, purpose, and a second chance. His success shows what’s possible when people are met with opportunity instead of judgment and given the tools to build a better future.
