When we think about workforce development, it can be easy to focus on one outcome: getting someone a job. While employment is certainly an important goal, my experience with Miami Valley Works has taught me that workforce development is much more. A job can meet an immediate need, but true workforce development helps individuals build the skills, confidence, and support systems needed to create long-term economic stability and career advancement.
Miami Valley Works, a service of Goodwill Easterseals Miami Valley, takes this approach by meeting individuals where they are and helping them identify where they want to go. Members begin by building foundational skills and then continue working individually with an Employment Coach. From resume development and interview preparation to job searching, employer and community connections, and professional development, our goal is not simply to help someone become employed. We want to help them stay employed, grow as individuals, and ultimately advance to self-sufficiency.
One of the things I value most about working in workforce development is that success looks different for every person who walks through our doors. For one member, success may mean receiving a job offer after months of searching. For another, it may be completing an interview with confidence for the first time. Sometimes success is simply seeing someone continue to show up after experiencing a setback that could have easily caused them to give up. These moments have changed the way I define success as an Employment Coach.
Our work does not end when a member receives a job offer. Employment can bring new challenges, and having continued support can make a difference. We work with members as they navigate their new positions, develop workplace skills, overcome barriers, and begin thinking beyond their current job toward their next opportunity. One of the greatest measures of success is seeing someone develop the confidence and skills to navigate their career independently.
