National Read a Book Day: Empowered Authors Edition

By now, you probably know that I wear many hats. My newest title is podcast host! Yes, your girl is the current host of the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council’s DD Talks Podcast. It is a fun and informative podcast that covers a wide range of topics that affect people with disabilities.

I have covered many subjects, from a unique telehealth program to universal changing tables. Today, I would like to highlight three local, self-published authors from my recent podcast “Ohio Authors with Disabilities” in honor of National Read a Book Day, coming up September 6^th.

Renee Wood is known throughout Ohio for being a strong advocate and a very good author. She has two books that I think you should know about. The first is titled No Choice: Services for People with Disabilities. Renee compiles posts from her blog to share the ins and outs of the disability system.

Her second book is an autobiography called The First Cut is the Sweetest, which chronicles her personal trails and tribulations as a person living with a disability.

Allison Boot took home the Title of Ms. Wheelchair Ohio 2023 and is also a powerful author. Allison has written several books, including a three-book series, Tales of Dance, featuring characters with disabilities. In addition, she has written four young adult books. Allison says she loves it when little girls that use a wheelchair see someone that looks like them in her books. It’s just reminder that representation matters.

Finally, your girl and Blogger-in-Chief Shari Cooper published a memoir titled I’m Ok with Myself. In my book, I talk about how I found a way to be ok with myself during all stages of my life. I also share a few of my personal independent living tips.
