Hello All,
Welcome today’s guest bloggers Tambie Trask and Shannon Morrisey as they provide you with information on the upcoming McCormick Vision Resource Fair.
Shari
On Thursday, October 12, 2017 from 9 AM to 1 PM Goodwill Easter Seals in collaboration with Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities, Wright State University and National Federation of the Blind Ohio will be presenting the McCormick Vision Resource Fair. This resource fair will have over 25 vendors including agencies, organizations, businesses and educational institutes who provide resources and services to individuals who are blind or visually impaired. There will also be vision screenings by Prevent Blindness and Flu shots available at this free public event.
So how can Goodwill Easter Seals Vision Services help you?
Last week a former participant was sharing with me her story of how she started losing her eye sight as an older adult. She was diagnosed with macular degeneration and was told by her doctor that her vision would only get worse. She was very frustrated and fearful of losing her vision. A friend of hers who had visited the Vision Center at Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley suggested that she give us a call. When she arrived at the vision center, this woman was amazed at all the equipment and technology that was available to her. She learned how to use the video magnifiers to read printed materials, specialized software on her home computer could allow it to read what was on the screen, and through a variety of kitchen aids she could continue to use the stove/microwave safely and cook independently in her kitchen.
Another person who has a visual impairment was sharing how the use of adapted technology was very beneficial to him at work when accessing a cell phone along with the use of JAWS, a computer software aid that helps him at work. Without these adaptations to technology, long term, his full time employment at Wright Patterson Air Force Base would not be possible.
As you can see, if it wasn’t for the adapted equipment like technology, kitchen aids and even in some cases a guide dog, life would not be as accessible to someone with a visual impairment. If you or a loved one have any of these needs we encourage you to come and check out all of the vendors and services that are offered in our area. It promises to be an eye opening experience!
Nice job, ladies!!!
Very informative! I always like to hear what other programs are doing here at GESMV.
Nice.
Glad to see they haven’t managed to totally gut the Vision Services program. So many amazing services offered here – kudos!
