Like every year, I like to put my spin on a holiday classic. This year, I’m taking on the movie Home Alone!
During this time of year, many are so caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season that they forget what matters most: family and friends.
The movie Home Alone is about a boy named Kevin who was left home alone before Christmas. Kevin had been acting out, so his mom told him to go and sleep in the attic (which was a very nice attic) as a soft punishment. Kevin’s mother was so busy getting ready to catch a plane for the family trip to Paris that she forgot he was asleep in the attic and accidentally left him.
Now, you may be thinking, that’s messed up. How can a mom forget their child? I get it because most have a million things on their mind, especially during this time of the year.
Don’t get too stressed out. As soon as Kevin’s mother figured out she had left him, she was off to the races to get back to him. Unfortunately, getting back required time and planning, but this story wouldn’t have been called Home Alone if it hadn’t.
Often, when you’re alone, things happen. Trust me, I know. Sometimes, when I’m home alone, I need to pick up my phone that I’ve dropped on the floor, want to open a pop, or put my earring back in my ear that has fallen off. All the things I’ve mentioned are kind of hard for me to do independently because of my disability. Although I have a caregiver, these things seem to happen after she leaves, leaving me baffled and thinking, are you kidding me.
Unlike me, Kevin was dealing with his own issue. Thieves were trying to break into his house, and he was not having it. Kevin’s tenacity reminds me of mine, for even when I’m home alone and things are hard, I still find a way to Make Things Happen.
Kevin went into protection mode and went above and beyond to protect his house. Alone on his journey, he even realized that someone that he thought was “scary” was actually cool and just standoffish because he missed his family.
Sometimes, to make you understand what means the most, which is the ones you love, you have to experience being stuck in a state of loneliness. Reflecting is a wonderful thing.
Of course, the movie ended on a high note. Kevin’s house wasn’t robbed, the burglars were caught, the not-so-scary person was reunited with his family, and Kevin’s mother and his family made it back to him. Kevin also realized that family is the most important thing that you can have in this life.
As you prepare for this holiday season, if you know of someone who’s home alone, reach out to him or her and share some holiday cheer.
Spending time with someone doesn’t cost a thing, but it means everything!
Happy Holidays
