Monday, June 30th is Social Media Day.
I never knew what good social media could be used for until I started working in the Marketing Department at Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley (GESMV) as Public Relations Assistant.
There are over 40 programs and services at GESMV to assist people with disabilities and others in need. It would be difficult to disseminate valuable information without the use of social media. Back in the day, the newspaper and TV news were the primary sources of finding information.
Now, social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram LinkedIn, YouTube, and others provide the fastest way to find a new recipe, learn a dance step, scope out a new vacation spot or summer outfit – anything, really. Personally, I get many new ideas for hairstyles from social media.
As I mentioned in previous posts, social media can open life for many. People who are unable to get out in the community due to medical issues, disability or having limited transportation can stay connected to what’s happening in the world thanks to social media. It has become the primary outlet for sharing everything.
Think about all you would miss if social media hadn’t come to be. Every day, the world is changing. I’m one that likes to be in the know. For instance, two new stores opened in my community last month and the deal door busters were amazing. I love to shop and love to get deals. If it wasn’t for social media, I wouldn’t have known about these stores in enough time to get the great deals that I got.
Social media also connects the world. I love watching Facebook reels on how other people with disabilities live around the world. I have found out so many things that have helped me in my own life from accessible clothing to adaptable equipment. I’ve also been able to assist in advocating when a call to action for inclusion crossed my screen.
Every day, social media is expanding so you and I won’t miss anything. Although it can be overwhelming at times, it’s a tool we should all have in our toolbox. It’s truly the quickest way to learn about something and if you’re bored, it’s the perfect cure.
Take some time to check out your social media platforms today and celebrate the way it has open-up the world for everyone to connect.
