I’m Living the Dream

As we prepare to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s upcoming birthday, I’m happy to say I’m living the dream he envisioned.

Although Dr. King’s primary focus was on the fair treatment of the African American community, he was just as keen on the equal treatment of all mankind. He was a true pioneer who spoke up for everyone. How many today can honestly say they want everyone to have the same opportunities as everyone else? This is why we set this day aside to pay homage to this great man.

I wonder where I would be today without the great work of Dr. King.

As a person with a disability, there can often be much injustice projected against my community because of what people perceive when looking from the outside. When this happens, assumptions of less than, incapable, or not worthy creep into one’s mind. As I know, but you might not, these assumptions are far from the truth. And, just to keep it real, I often feel these assumptions level up even more if you’re black and have a disability.

I thank Dr. King for putting a plan in place so that even when society throws its prejudices in my path, they can’t because he set a path of fair treatment for me and others so that we could show our full potential and succeed.

As a product of Dr. King’s dream, I’m doing many things, such as working for an agency that honors diversity. If not for Dr. King, I probably wouldn’t be working alongside my coworkers doing what I love, which is blogging.

There’s no doubt that if it weren’t for Dr. King’s dream, I would not be living the dream as a homeowner in the suburbs with my favorite guy and my fur baby, Tiny.

I know I would have no voice to advocate for myself and others if not for Dr. King’s dream. Not only did his dream help my voice be heard, but it also ensured that people would listen. One great thing that happens when people listen is that things often get done to make things better for you and me.

Finally, because of Dr. King’s dream, I have many different people who have enriched my life. My band of many includes people with disabilities, people of different colors and nationalities, people who are different from me, and people who are of different faiths from mine.

Dr. King’s dream brought people together, no matter who you are. It was one that all could share, and because of that, I’m grateful.

Thank you, Dr. King, for having a dream and allowing me to be a product of it. Enjoy the link below of his iconic speech.
