Ameera Joins The Block

When hearing the first verse of this song, Sunny days, everything, aye ok, you immediately know it’s the theme song to Sesame Street.

I love Sesame Street! My siblings and I grew up watching it as kids. Each character had its own unique look. My favorite by far was, and still is, Oscar the Grouch! Although he was grumpy, he was so darn cute, I couldn’t help but to like him.

Sesame Street has always been great about bringing characters on the show to teach children about differences and acceptance. A few years ago, they brought on a character named, Julia. Julia had autism. Julia explained what autism is to those on the block, and in return, they were able to ask her questions to get a better understanding of the disability.

Well, I’m happy to report, Sesame Street has done it again with the creation of a character named, Ameera.

Ameera is a beautiful and bright character.  She has a spinal cord injury and uses a wheelchair for mobility purposes. Ameera also uses crutches to get around too. She’s described as being a natural born leader as well as a comedian. Although, I love Oscar the Grouch, I can really relate to Ameera, for we have many of the same characteristics.

I use a cute little red scooter and I also have a walker that I use for mobility purposes. I’ve also been told many times; I have a great sense of humor. It has always been my philosophy, having a disability is not a death sentence and I’m not going to be so uptight about it. Often, some of the situations I encountered, due to my disability, are funny. And, as for being a leader, I was born to lead so that I can bring advocacy to the forefront, not just for myself, but for my peers too.

By Ameera joining the Sesame Street family, the world will become more aware of individuals with spinal cord injuries and the use of adapted equipment, such as wheelchairs. Sesame Street has always done a great job at spreading awareness about people’s differences. They do it in a way that’s not scary and easy to understand. They have creative ways in bringing forth subjects that’s often hard to talk about; doors of communication begin to open and meaningful conversation starts.

Understanding differences can be difficult, but Sesame Street are pros at sharing awareness. I’m happy Ameera is on the block. She along with all the other amazing characters will spread awareness about unique differences which include people with disabilities to continue to create a more, inclusive world.
