Double Decker Dreams

My good people, it’s National Sandwich Month!

Can we agree there’s nothing better than a big ole double-decker sandwich piled up with your favorite, meat, cheese, veggies, and condiments?

When I learned there was a month celebrating sandwiches, I had to investigate the origin. According to my research, one of the first accounts of the making a sandwich was created by a rabbi and scholar named Hillel of the first century BCE. History says Hillel made sandwiches of Paschal lamb, bitter herb, and unleavened matzoh bread to offer up to the people during the Jewish Holiday of Passover.

Who knew a sandwich could be so important?

As for me, I have my own thoughts about why sandwiches are awesome. As I’ve mentioned in previous blogs, some foods are harder for me to eat independently due to my disability. Luckily, sandwiches are not one of them.

Here are some of my favorite places to go to satisfy my double-decker sandwich obsession:

My number one go-to is Subway! I’ve been rocking with Subway since day one! My favorite is the Black Forest Ham. One thing that makes Subway sandwiches so yummy is their delicious bread selection. I start my sandwich with cheese bread. Then I move on to the mozzarella, and double ham. I go easy on the lettuce, onion, green peppers, pickles and olives and top my sandwich off with light mustard, oil, and vinegar. I get it split into fours and man, is it good!

Firehouse Subs is the next stop I make on my quest to devour a sandwich! This is where I take on an Italian sub! Genoa Salami, pepperoni, and Capicola, light condiments, including a delicious Italian dressing and BOOM. I must admit, eating this sandwich can be messy, but it’s so worth it. I usually take the sandwich apart and just eat the meat. Where’s there’s a will to eat, there’s a way.

Now say the word Potbelly a few times. Part of the reason I love going to Potbelly is just because of its name. It cracks me up! This is where I get the sandwich called, “A Wreck!” Again, this one is piled up with meat including, turkey breast, hickory smoked ham, Agnus roast beef, and salmi. To eat this one, I leave it in its wrapper which helps keep it together.

As you can see, sandwiches make my life a little easier. What sandwich is your top jam? Is there one that you think would be easy for me to eat? Let me know. I’m always up for trying something new!
