Furniture Facelift Accessibility

I love fashionable clothing, but I also love fashionable decor for my home.

When my favorite guy and I first purchased our home, it seemed like I was buying something to beautify it every weekend. That was eight years ago, and although I’ve been buying things along the way, I’m ready for even more facelifts!

During my first shopping spree, I didn’t see any beautiful accessible things to put in the bathroom that I needed. I need different accessibility in my restroom: a shower chair, handrails, and shelves that I can reach. Although I found these items, they weren’t cute. My mom used to say, “Shari, not everything you buy must be cute, but it must be functional.” I used to respond, “Ok mom, but you know me. If it’s mine, it must be cute!” Thinking about our conversations still tickles me to this day.

Luckily, my house has two full bathrooms. My favorite guy is a huge Pittsburg Steelers fan, so his bathroom is filled with Steelers décor. I’m a girly girl so I keep my bathroom bright and colorful. Currently, it’s red and black with a rose theme. For the most part, I love it, but my bathroom accessibility features aren’t as vibrant as my personality. They are gray and white. Like Mom said, they are functional but that’s about all.

Until now, I never knew of anyone who made or sold bathroom accessibility that are frankly, dope! Mega furniture chain store IKEA now carries the accessible bathroom brand called Basingen. I am in LOVE with this brand! Not all the items are colorful, but they are very chic. The design reminds me of something you’d see in an upscale hotel or spa. Most accessibility products come in black, but they are carved in beautiful designs.

Even though people with disabilities need accessibility fixtures for everyday living, I don’t see why they should look unattractive or resemble something you may see in a hospital.

Just like my clothes, scooter, shoes, and everything else in my life, I want my home to look a certain way: beautiful! All the way down to my bathroom accessibility. I love designing my place to reflect my own personal style.

I’ll be making a trip back to IKEA soon. Stay tuned to see what I buy as my new mission is to give my bathroom a facelift!

I have to check out that company. I love Ikea and have boughten many things there. Thank you for sharing, Shari. Accessibility also becomes an issue as we age, and it is nice to know like you said you don’t have to make your bathroom look like a hospital’s bathroom. I would love to get more information on other accessibility items. I know there is a company who creates accessible gardening tools and raised gardens.

Thanks for this article, Shari. As I age, I have a greater need for things like grab bars and a walk in shower. I’m happy to learn about the line of chic accessories that are available as my abilities change.

It must be in the air as I was looking to change up my little place one room at time, then saw an IKEA commercial on TV. I am wanting to get back to the basic with a little pop of color

Hi Shari, you have not lost your touch! What a great topic. I looked up the furniture and am trying to decide whether or not to drive to West Chester for a field trip or just have a few things delivered. The step stool with the high handle is my first purchase!! I will get it in brown for safety and when they make them cute and chic I’ll get another one for that.
