One day, everyone is going to grow old. To maintain a sense of independence, a person is going to need resources. On that note, join my friend and coworker Cindy Carusone as she serves as guest blogger and share some of the resources Goodwill Easterseals Miami Valley offers the senior population.
Shari
Did you know that May is designated as Older Americans Month in the United States? It’s a time to recognize and honor the contributions of older adults in our communities and shine a light on the challenges many face as they age.
Soon, I’ll officially be part of that group—or wait, maybe I already am! I keep forgetting how old I am. I’m part of one of the largest generations: the Boomers, but I like to think of myself as a young Boomer.
My good friend Shari asked me to write this blog to spread the word about some amazing resources available at Goodwill Easterseals Miami Valley (GESMV) for our senior population. It’s something near and dear to my heart, not just because I work here, but because I’ve lived through a very personal journey that made me realize how crucial support can be.
A few years back, my father began experiencing worsening dementia. He was fiercely independent and yes, stubborn! But after a certain age, haven’t we earned the right to be a little stubborn? He lived alone after my mother passed, and the worry became constant. Did he turn the stove off? Did he go for a walk and not come back? Was he still driving? My sisters and I took turns keeping an eye on him, which became overwhelming—but of course, we did it with love. It was our turn to care for him.
It was during the height of COVID, and unfortunately, options were limited. My father passed before we could take advantage of the resources available through GESMV, but it brings me comfort and pride to know that we’re able to support others who are going through similar experiences.
Goodwill Easterseals Senior Services Program offers a wide range of services designed to help older adults stay independent and active, while also offering support and relief for caregivers. One of our cornerstone offerings is the Senior Day Program, available Monday through Friday. It includes:
- Door-to-door transportation
- Engaging, senior-focused activities
- Personal care services
- Catered meals and snacks
Everything is built around person-centered care, respecting everyone’s preferences, abilities, culture, and their desire to age at home with dignity.
But that’s just the beginning. We also offer:
- A Senior Employment Program to help older adults re-enter the workforce
- Low vision support services
- A Medical Equipment Loan Program
…and so much more. If you’re curious, you can explore our services at www.gesmv.org/senior-services, or email seniors@gesmv.org with any questions—or to schedule a tour of our Day Program.
I don’t just work at Goodwill Easterseals Miami Valley—I live the mission. From children to seniors, my family has benefited from our programs. My hope in writing this is to spread awareness and let people know: you are not alone. Help is here, and it’s just a phone call or visit away.
Let’s honor Older Americans not just this month, but every day—with love, respect, and the support they deserve.
As an employee who takes inbound calls, I appreciate a review of this information. Also, thank you for sharing your story. I am sure that walking this path gives you empathy for the individuals and families you serve.
