When parents are expecting a baby, all they want to hear is, their bundle of joy is developing typically. Who can blame parents for that? A general ultrasound can detect many things like the sex of a baby and if he or she has ten fingers and toes, but what happens when it detects something is wrong?
For Whitney and Adam Dinkel, their worst nightmare surfaced when their ultrasound detected something wrong with their baby. The prognosis was spina bifida. Although devastated over the news and the uncertainty of their child’s future, the Dinkels set out to make sure their baby had a chance at the best life possible.
In order for the Dinkel’s baby to be given the best chance at a “normal” life, it was decided by all parties involved to perform a surgery. The surgery on the fetus would help development while still in the womb and as they say in Hollywood, the rest is history.
Since Roman was born, he has had his share of brain surgeries; first one being at the tender age of three months. Seeing he’s only two now, I would say that’s a lot for someone so young to go through. One thing you should know by now, is that mind over matter is amazing; the human spirit takes over your mind. Don’t get me twisted, the struggle of having a disability is real but the reward of independence trumps the struggle every time.
Little Roman is not only beating the odds, but making remarkable strides. Literally, Roman has learned to walk with arm crutches. For anyone who has walked on crutches, you know it takes a lot of balance and weight shifting so you don’t fall. Roman’s mother Whitney says, “he was apprehensive about using them at first, yet still curious. Eventually, curiosity got the best of Roman and with the help of physical therapy, he begin walking independently on his crutches.” Check out the link below of Roman walking. Even the family dog, Maggie, appears to be excited for his accomplishment.

I always like the saying, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. You never know what life is going to throw your way but if you have courage and faith, you can make it. Roman has showed the world, that all things are possible with persistence. He’s already an internet sensation at 2 years old. I can’t wait to see what else he will do in the future.
Next time you feel like you can’t do something, remember Roman’s story and Walk It Out!
