You Scream, We Scream, Shari Loves Ice Cream

If I had to pick one thing to eat for the rest of my life (besides pizza), it would be ice cream!

Ice cream is one of life’s guilty pleasures. It’s so good it has its own section in the grocery store. When shopping, I watch people picking different items to put in their cart with little to no enthusiasm. But when they hit the ice cream aisle, their energy changes. Talk about hype-ness overload! Watch how happy people become the next time you’re in the ice cream aisle, especially kids.

As much as I love ice cream, I admit it’s one of those foods that is hard for me to eat independently. To take down the creamy sensation the “typical” way, a spoon is required. As I mentioned in previous posts, due to my disability of cerebral palsy, a fine motor skill like using a spoon is difficult. I can do it, but it takes time and concentration. But when I’m ready to devour ice cream, time and concentration goes out the window.

Thanks to the way the world has advanced, there are many ways to eat ice cream that don’t require a spoon. I have taken full advantage of these methods, which makes my mouth a lot happier.

Milkshakes are my primary way of enjoying ice cream. I’m not a fan of milk, particularly. My mom knew this and wanted to make sure I got regular doses of vitamin D to help my bones become strong when I was young.  Milkshakes were the way she got milk into my diet. Her vanilla shake (my favorite) was the bomb! She got fancier as time went on by mixing two ice cream flavors and fruit together to make me “super shakes”.

Another way I get my ice cream intake is by eating sundae bars. Sundae bars are very accessible for me to eat independently. Yes, I must eat them kind of fast, so they won’t melt, but that’s fun for me. Some of my favorite sundae bars are Creamsicles and Drumsticks. Frosty’s and blizzards are also excellent options. I can usually manage the Frosty with a spoon if it hasn’t started to melt. But if it has melted, I slurp it up through a straw. Blizzards are also a little easier for me to eat because of the way they’re made. Because the ice cream is thick, it doesn’t slide off the spoon.

July 20th is National Ice Cream Day. If you don’t know what your favorite type of ice cream is, let me suggest you try out a few. In the meantime, for those who know their favorite, drop a comment.

I love ice cream too, Shari! My favorite way is in a bowl with a spoon. I stay away from cones as they create too much of a mess for me. I love a sundae, but I must be willing to put up with the mess it might cause while eating it.

Pizza and ice cream are my favorites too. It would be fun to share these favorites together sometime. Take care! Keep cool with ice cream.
